Indeed, women have always had intimacy with fire. It rages in their veins, it falls from their hips, and they convert it to a warmth that a heater can’t compare. It is with this knowledge that in Xhosa culture they have been entrusted with the collection of firewood – “ukutheza”. Making of a fire has always been a tiny revolt by unsung heroines who laugh at the effort to contain a wild thing, because even streams know there is no stopping the rain.
